Now, Let me start by saying, I have been eying this restaurant for almost a year now. As some of you know, I adore Thai food. Since traveling to Thailand in 2008, I have an appreciation for the exquisite taste that Thai cuisine offers and I must say Tamnak Thai arose to the occasion.
Within minutes of our arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome from a waiter, and seated promptly (we did not have a reservation). The restaurant was outfitted so beautifully and accompanied by “romantic” lighting. Driving up to the once re-purposed colonial home, I was skeptical about what awaited us inside, with all the renovations going on outside I have to say I was delighted by the attention to detail inside the restaurant. I mean look at that chair!
My husband and I shared everything, except the soup. The portions seemed to be just right for us. Anything more we would have definitely over ate. Now my personal review of the food, it was Fabulous. Each course was rich with flavor and accompanied with the trio of sauces: tamarind, mango and pepper, it added an extra kick with out over pouring the spices already in the food.
The customer service seems to always be questionable (unfortunately) at establishments in Trinidad. That being said, I was pleasantly delighted with two of our three servers. There was just this one server, she was like the mother of that boyfriend you had in school who just hated you but had to be nice to for the sake of her son. She was cold, blunt, did not exchange any pleasantries and to be honest I am pretty sure she did not even look at us. She walked right up to the table and said “sparkling or flat water”, I watched my husband in shock considering how fabulous the rest of the wait staff was. I personally feel that when I take my time to get ready, show up at a marvelous restaurant, I should be treated fabulously, I mean at least a little friendly exchange or a smile? No?
Ok let’s get down to the nitty grtiiy. Before heading out to the restaurant, as always, I checked out reviews on Trip Advisor. I am always hesitant because I feel like I am almost cheating myself out of the “first glimpse” experience, and let’s be honest as much as Trip Advisor is a great tool, it can also give you a negative condentation before you actually walk in the door. Well the reviews were mixed, but reviewers did seem to all agree that the restaurant is quite pricey, however I disagree. Tamnak Thai is not your average every day restaurant, it’s more on the fancy side, it offers an ambiance perfect for a celebratory dinner, date night or entertaining a business client/colleague. Compared to other restaurants in its class, I would say its priced as quite well, in the middle of the price range for higher end restaurants in Trinidad. Our meals, with 3 drinks and a bottle of water, plus vat+service charge and our own personal TIP came to $700TTD.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice evening out and something a little different then your every day burgers or creole food.
