As some of you may know I have a beautiful 8-month chocolate brown pitbull, named Delilah Shay.
Delilah’s mortal enemy: Ticks
Our initially course of action was probably the first choice most dog lovers choose, Frontline, and we found it actually didn’t agree with Delilah. Her skin became quite flaky, and she began to shed profusely.
After many searches on the Internet, trusty old Pinterest came through for me.
In your re-purposed spray bottle add:
- 1 cup of water
- 2 cups of distilled white vinegar
- 2 Tbsp. of Almond oil (or vegetable oil if you have that laying around the house)
- 1 Tsp. of Peppermint oil or lemon juice (flea repellent)
Two things ticks hate, sulfur and vinegar. While the almond/vegetable oil adds the sulfur component to the vinegar, you can also add a little citrus oil to help repel fleas.
Combine ingredients in a re-purposed spray bottle. Shake well. This natural repellent can be used numerous times a day on a dry coat. Our regular daily routine is to spray Delilah twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, usually after meals. If we are headed to a park or the beach for the day, I generally give her an extra spritz on our way out and as soon as we get home.
While we found this lovely potion a great alternative to harsh chemical repellents I would advise you to still check your pet for ticks frequently. Delilah is a house dog, so we make sure to check daily.
Cheers to cheaper, healthier alternatives
